How to make a Highland Dance Bun

Wondering how to make a Highland Dance bun? We’ve got you covered with supplies, and three types of buns you can make!

Step 1: Gather your supplies.

These links are to Amazon, but you can purchase these supplies locally as well.  

For all buns, you will need the following:

1. Mousse and/or Gel
2. Hairspray
3. Hair ties
4. Bobby pins
5. U-shaped Hairpins
6. Hair nets

The following supplies depend on the type of bun you are making:

1. Snappy Bun: Snap Tool
2. Donut Bun: Donut
3. Rolled Bun: Hair Roller

Step 2: Make a high ponytail.

Make sure the dancer’s hair is well brushed prior to this step.  A typical Highland Dance bun is visible from the front, so you want to place the high ponytail in the center of the crown of the head.

Step 3: Make your bun. 

There are videos for three types of buns below, a snappy bun, a donut bun, and a rolled bun.  For all of them, make sure to finish with a hairnet and LOTS of hairspray.
