What are Highland Dance Exams?

Dance Exams

Every year at Highland Dance Albuquerque, our dancers from ages 3 to adult participate in exams through the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD). These exams measure a dancers’ progression from their very first marches and skips all the way to sitting a professional teacher’s exam.  It’s a wonderful opportunity for dancers to measure their yearly progress, get personalized feedback, and prizes all the way from Scotland!

Measurements of Progress

Starting from the Starlite exams for the youngest dancers, and progressing up to the professional exams to certify teachers, Highland Dance exams are a wonderful opportunity for dancers to set goals, celebrate progress, and gain confidence in their skills. These exams are not competitions—they’re meant to measure the progress of each dancer against an international standard. No matter the level of the dancer or their progress during the year, there is always an exam they can succeed in!

Prizes from Scotland

Following the exam, dancers receive written feedback from the examiner, a certificate, and a medal or trophy all the way from Scotland!  This makes exams a positive and encouraging experience that help build confidence and discipline. Preparing for an exam gives students a clear focus and helps them strengthen their technique, memory, and musicality.

Sadie Simpson Scholarships

Once the dancers reach age ten, they have the opportunity to be nominated for the North American Sadie Simpson Scholarships, an opportunity to demonstrate their skills in technique and theory, and connect with dancers from across the United States and Canada.  For our dancers that have reached this level, it is a highlight of their dance season!
